Looking and Thinking Ahead: Challenges affecting Israel and the Middle East Region in 2015 and beyond & proposed solutions

The Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya is pleased to announce an annual scholarship aimed at creating an opportunity for important intellectual discourse, through a written presentation providing potential solutions to challenges facing the Middle East. Based on the values of freedom and responsibility, outstanding IDC students and future leaders will apply annually to be awarded the Neville and Emma Shulman Literary IDC Challenges Cup. This most generous and innovative initiative can potentially have extraordinary results and implications, essential to the Middle East Region and the world at large more than ever before.

A professional committee will select the outstanding research proposals and studies to be awarded the scholarships. The committee will include the Founder & President of IDC Herzliya, its Provost, Neville Shulman CBE and Emma Shulmanand the Dean of the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy & Strategy. The selection will be made according to the following criteria:

                         

·          Quality of work

·          Contribution and applicability to considering Middle East challenges

·          Originality and innovativeness

·          ‘Out of the box’ suggestions.

 

The following candidates will be eligible to submit a proposal:

 

·          Second and Third Year Students currently studying at IDC Herzliya

·          Graduate Students currently studying at IDC Herzliya

 

The winner of the Neville and Emma Shulman Literary IDC Challenges Cup will receive $7,500 and a Cup, which will be produced to a high standard in silver and engraved with the winner’s name on the Cup every year. The 3 runners up will receive amounts of $500 each. Selected papers will be published periodically.

Technicalities

Submissions will be accepted until January 31st, 2015 and winners will be announced by the end of April, 2015 (TBC). The submissions will be made inEnglish, comprising between 7 and 10 A4 pages. Submission should be sent via email to Dr. Amichai Magen at: shulmanaward@idc.ac.il

Each research proposal must include the following documents:

1. The candidate’s personal details: full name, address, telephone number, email address, a curriculum vitae, a list of previous publications (if existing.

2. A cover letter and statement of purpose written by the candidate, including the following: the research topic reasoning; whether the research proposal has been previously submitted elsewhere (e.g., as a position paper, seminar assignment); if so, has it been or will it be published and where.

3. The Proposal of not longer than ten pages, encompassing the following:

1. The importance of the topic

2. The research question(s)

3. A literature review

4. Methodology

5. Proposed Solutions

 

* Research proposals submitted after January 31st at midnight, will not be examined by the committee. In addition, it is the candidate's responsibility to verify the admission of the documents - candidates need to make sure they receive a confirmation of their submission.
